We’ve All Been Here
There’s that moment when the cursor blinks in a brand‑new Rails app and you can already hear the future: “Alright, Devise, Pundit, admin, jobs, CI, deploy, API docs… and by Friday I’ll remember what joy felt like.” You wanted to build your product; instead, you’re rebuilding your scaffolding. Again.
Last month, I told myself I’d “just wire auth real quick” before lunch. By sunset, I had Devise mostly working, Pundit half‑working, and my confidence not working at all. Meanwhile, my MVP roadmap was doing yoga - lots of stretching, no forward movement. The next morning I stared at my cooling coffee and thought, “How did I spend 12 hours to arrive at the same login form I’ve shipped 14 times?”
The Quiet, Universal Loop
What’s wild is how many of us run this loop:
- Spin up a fresh app (fresh like bread, stale like our patience by day three)
- Copy a “known good” snippet from an old project (known good… until it isn’t)
- Promise ourselves we’ll circle back for tests and docs (we won’t, future-us is busy)
- Wire CI, jobs, deployment, and security in “just a few tasks” (and one existential crisis)
We don’t talk about it much, but the pattern is everywhere. Different teams, same sigh. Different products, same slow start that eats momentum.
Why It Gets Us Every Time
- We’re proud of our craft (and also allergic to duct-taped foundations)
- We want velocity without compromising trust (like wanting a race car that parallel parks itself)
- We’ll take boring stability over clever hacks - except when deadlines whisper sweet nothings
It’s not laziness; it’s loyalty to quality colliding with the reality of time. If shipping dreams had a sound, it would be a build passing on the first try, not the fifth rerun with --only-failures.
The Moment We Quietly Choose
Every project begins with an invisible fork:
1. Rebuild the basics, “just to keep it pure”
2. Start from a stable foundation and get to the unique stuff
3. Or, bravely procrastinate by “refactoring the refactor that refactored our refactor” (heroic, unhelpful)
We’ve all chosen door one more times than we admit. Not because it’s smart - because it feels familiar. Familiar can masquerade as safe. But momentum is safer than nostalgia.
You’re Not Alone in This
If your last sprint retro included “set up auth” for the fourth sprint in a row, you’re in good company here. If you’ve wrestled Tailwind classes until they looked like alphabet soup, sit down - we saved you a chair. If your deployment notes read like a travel diary for Nginx, we see you. Bring logs, we have snacks.
Tell Us Your Two-Week Story
- What’s your most “I thought this would take an afternoon” setup saga?
- Where does momentum die for you - auth, payments, admin, CI, or deployment?
- What have you learned that you wish past-you knew?
Drop it in the comments. Share the facepalm, share the fix, share the small wins. This is a room full of people who’ve been there, forgot why, and then did it again. We’re here for the belonging as much as the breakthroughs.
A Little Hope, Lightly Toasted
We don’t need to pretend the grind is noble to feel proud of our work. Pride can come from the craft we protect and the speed we allow ourselves. It’s okay to choose shipping over suffering; your coffee deserves to be warm at least once this quarter. And when you do ship faster, remember to come back and tell us - because the only thing better than a green build is the chorus of “same here” that follows.
Your turn. What button do you find yourself pressing, and why? We’re listening - no judgment, just nods, a few knowing laughs, and a community that gets it. (And yes, we’re still laughing about that refactor of the refactor. Some callbacks are earned.)
