Step 1: rails new idea_app
You type the command. Terminal purrs. Hope blooms. You’re a founder, a visionary, a captain of code. Coffee tastes like IPO. Birds sing Sinatra. For 45 seconds, life is perfect.
Steps 2 to 105: pain
Then reality walks in wearing steel-toed boots.
- Devise is “almost working” (almost, like your gym membership).
- Pundit policies multiply like Gremlins after midnight.
- Your REST API needs JWT, Swagger, and… therapy.
- RSpec/Capybara boots up, looks at your flaky test, and files for emancipation.
- CI/CD politely declines to run because your YAML has a comma with big main-character energy.
- Background jobs? They succeed locally and ghost you in production.
- Deployment via Mina/systemd/Nginx transforms your droplet into a cryptid last seen near port 443. (If you see it, do not approach; leave pizza and a service file.)
What’s our secret to shipping faster? Bourbon, regret, and paprika. No actually - a production-ready foundation you don’t have to duct-tape at 2 a.m.
Step 106: You receive your own password reset email!
You’ve traveled the hero’s journey. The dragon is slain. The inbox dings. “Reset your password.” From you. To you. At last, a feature. (You click it. It works. You cry a little. It’s beautiful.)
The Honest Plot Twist
You didn’t want a framework. You wanted a starting line that wasn’t quicksand.
- Auth + roles that behave (even on Monday mornings).
- Admin that’s admin-y (not “CSV, but make it vibes”).
- REST API with JWT + Swagger that documents itself without passive-aggressive tone.
- Tests that pass for reasons other than divine intervention.
- CI/CD that ships on push (and doesn’t demand a blood pact).
- Background jobs that don’t only run on leap years.
- Deployment that ends with “We’re live” instead of “We’re moving to a cabin.”
What’s our stack? Kubernetes, crypto mining, and a haunted bash alias. No actually - Rails 8.0.2 + Ruby 3.4.4 (YJIT), Bootstrap, and boring best practices. Boring like seatbelts. Boring like interest compounding. Boring like customers paying you.
Bootstrap Without the Wrestling Match
Look, Tailwind is powerful. But some of us want to ship buttons without learning esoteric rune magic. Bootstrap is the comfy hoodie: familiar, durable, and doesn’t demand utility-class poetry at 3 a.m. You get clean, classic structure that just works - and documentation that reads like a friend, not a riddle.
Why the Grind Keeps Winning (And How to Steal Back Your Week)
You’ve tried:
1. Copy-pasting from “that one old app” (the archaeological dig).
2. Free GitHub templates (now with 200 open issues and one feral TODO).
3. Tutorials from 2019 (great year for playlists, not for security patches).
4. “One last” from-scratch build (bold move, see you in three sprints).
Fake solution: rename the app “MVPFinalFINALreallythis_one”. Real solution: start on a foundation that’s already production-ready so you can build the part that’s actually yours.
Rails Blueprint: Skip to the Good Part
Rails Blueprint gives you the unglamorous, unsexy, absolutely vital stuff:
- Auth, roles, admin (grown-up scaffolding, not vibes-based engineering).
- REST API with JWT + Swagger (the docs don’t lie this time).
- RSpec/Capybara + GitHub Actions (green checks, fewer night sweats).
- Background jobs wired sensibly (Redis isn’t a rumor).
- Deployment via Mina/systemd/Nginx (push, breathe, ship).
- Security and patterns that won’t combust when traffic lands.
Mock warning: Side effects may include spontaneous momentum, reduced sighing, and finishing features while your coffee is still warm.
Okay, But What About Pride?
Shipping isn’t just time math. It’s dignity. It’s launching something that feels real on day one - so your idea doesn’t die in your head while you rewrite password resets like a code janitor with a hero complex. Build the thing only you can build; let the boilerplate be gloriously, responsibly boring.
The Callback You Deserve
Remember Step 106? That password reset email you sent… to you? With Rails Blueprint, that’s Step 7. Step 8 is your first customer doing it instead. Step 9 is you smiling like someone who finally escaped boilerplate purgatory. (We put extra snacks in Step 10.)
Your Move
- Want better leads
- Care about ROI
- Not currently mid-surgery
If that’s you, skip the pain parade. Start on rails that actually feel like rails. I’ll be over here shipping features and refreshing Stripe like it’s Instagram.
Silly sign-off: I wrote this on a deploy, and nothing exploded - send help or high-fives.
