The three easy steps (and the other 700)
I opened a fresh Rails repo last week and told myself: “Auth, payments, admin - easy.” By lunch I had Devise plugged in, by dinner I had Pundit rules, and by midnight I had… a thousand-yard stare and six browser tabs arguing about JWT lifetimes. Somewhere between ‘just a quick setup’ and ‘why is Nginx judging me,’ I lost an entire weekend. Side effects may include whisper-yelling at systemd and befriending your CI logs.
A story you’ve probably lived
Here’s how it went:
1. Add authentication.
2. Add payments.
3. Add admin.
4. Accidentally build a small nation-state of configs, secrets, and dashboards guarded by a YAML hydra.
Every step felt reasonable - until it wasn’t. One “tiny” choice spawned ten “obvious” follow-ups, then twenty “quick” fixes, then me googling “Capybara timeout poetry.” The app still said “Hello, world,” but my brain said “Goodnight, Vienna.” It escalates faster than a Friday deploy turning into a Saturday vibe check.
The quiet part we all know
This isn’t incompetence; it’s gravity. Rails makes the happy path delightful, but production is its own ecosystem. Auth isn’t just login; it’s sessions, password resets, lockable, confirmations. Payments are webhooks, retries, idempotency keys. Admin isn’t a page; it’s roles, audits, and that one report no one will ever admit to needing until tomorrow morning.
And we still haven’t touched:
- Background jobs (where retries go to make new friends)
- REST API with JWT + Swagger (nice, clear docs… eventually)
- CI/CD and GitHub Actions (green checkmarks, grey hair)
- Deployment with Mina/systemd/Nginx (aka “choose your final boss”)
- Tests that catch regressions (and your pride)
Also: snacks. Always snacks.
Why it hits so personally
It’s not just the hours. It’s watching your idea stall while you rebuild the same scaffolding you swore you’d never rebuild again. It’s that moment when your MVP becomes MIA, not from complexity, but from repetition. And yet - look around. We’re all doing it. Different projects, same dance.
A small circle in a big room
If you’ve ever:
- Promised a weekend MVP and surfaced Tuesday with a perfectly tuned RuboCop config
- Spun up a “quick” RSpec suite that became a “spiritual journey”
- Deployed on a “temporary” server that turned into a historical monument
…then you’re in the club. Jackets pending; they’re stuck in a failing pipeline.
Let’s talk about it
Drop a comment with your most “three steps… plus 700 more” moment:
- The config you thought was trivial until it wasn’t
- The admin report that became a thesis
- The webhook that ghosted you like a bad date
No pitches, no fixes - just that deep exhale of “same.” Because belonging starts where the nodding does. And if today you’re knee-deep in roles, routes, and retries, consider this a hand on your shoulder: we’ve been there, we’re still here, and your idea is worth pushing through the sludge for.
Okay, your turn. I’ll be over here pretending my Swagger docs were always this organized (and absolutely not a crime scene two hours ago).
