If You’ve Rebuilt Auth This Year, You’re Among Friends

The two buttons we keep pressing

Last Tuesday, I opened a dusty repo named “starter-final-FINAL”. I hit bundle, ran the server, and immediately met 47 TODOs staring back like unpaid parking tickets. By lunch I had re‑wired Devise, nudged Pundit, and promised myself this would be the last time. By dinner I was whispering sweet nothings to systemd. Again.

We’ve all lived this loop: copy an old app, inherit old ghosts, and promise it’ll be faster this time. Then Friday rolls around and you’ve shipped… a login screen and a very stern README. Faster than a hotfix at 4:59 pm, slower than a deploy when everyone’s watching.

You’re not alone in the boilerplate spiral

It’s a quiet, universal thing in Railsland. We say we’re “spinning up an MVP,” but what we really mean is:
- Wire auth and roles (and your soul)

- Sketch an admin that only you understand (and fear)

- Stitch CI/CD, background jobs, and deployment (plus a ritual dance for Nginx)

- Add docs, tests, and… a sandwich

Some weeks it feels like we’re building the same kitchen before we can cook. The recipes change, sure - but the stove, the sink, the fire alarm? Same every time. It scales faster than a backlog after a stakeholder says “quick change.”

A quick story (that might be yours too)

A friend pinged me: “MVP this weekend?” By Sunday night they had JWT + Swagger mostly wired, an admin halfway there, and a CI run that failed gracefully (twice). The product? Still a sketch. They weren’t lacking skill - they were drowning in groundwork. Monday morning they said, “I just want to build the actual thing.” And I felt that in my bones.

The quiet pride we’re chasing

Underneath the grind is a simple desire: ship with pride, not apologies. We want our apps to feel solid, not taped together with TODOs and vibes. We want to focus on the piece that’s ours - unique logic, real UX, that moment a user smiles - without negotiating with Mina, Nginx, and their lawyer.

Let’s talk about it (really)

Drop your war stories:
- The “temporary” admin that turned five years old

- The test suite you meant to write (and named TODO_spec.rb)

- The deployment that needed “one tiny change” and a camping chair

- The time you swore off utility-class soup and ordered takeout instead

Share what you rebuilt for the hundredth time and what you wish you didn’t have to. Tell us where you lost momentum - and where you found it again. We’ll read, nod, and say “same.” Side effects may include relief, catharsis, and fewer tabs named finalv3really.

A small promise, together

Here’s the callback we all deserve: next time we hit Friday, let’s aim to ship something a user can touch - even if the admin is still wearing sweatpants. We’ll keep each other honest, cheer the tiny wins, and remember this is a community, not a solo speedrun. We belong here - tired, talented, and still showing up.

Your turn. Pull up a chair, tell us your loop, and let’s make the next one shorter.
