The late-night confession we all know
I once told a client, “Timeline slipped a bit due to changing requirements.” What I meant was, I spent two weeks re-assembling auth, roles, payments, admin, and deployment like a developer reenacting Groundhog Day with Devise and Nginx. My coffee had more uptime than my staging box.
A familiar loop
You open a new Rails repo, promise yourself you’ll “move fast,” and then:
1. Add Devise “real quick,”
2. Wire Pundit and roles,
3. Spin up payments, admin, background jobs, Swagger docs, CI, deployment…
4. Remember you also promised to “touch grass” this month. Nature seen only in Heroku error pages.
It’s the same loop many of us run: copy from Old Project A, steal a snippet from Tutorial B, patch a free template from 2019 C, and pray the JWT setup isn’t haunted. You’re not behind - you’re just human in a workflow that pretends it’s a conveyor belt and then turns into a Rube Goldberg machine.
You, me, and the boilerplate blues
We’ve all tried different routes:
- DIY from scratch (the noble way… plus three surprise weekends).
- Dusting off past apps (archeology with more stack traces).
- Big kits that feel like moving into a mansion when you needed a studio (with a butler named Tailwind you didn’t hire).
And still, the MVP arrives fashionably late, wearing an “I rebuilt auth again” nametag. Side effects may include whispering to systemd like it’s a houseplant.
The real heart of it
Under the launch emails and burn-down charts is something tender: pride, relief, momentum. We want to ship without apologizing for duct tape. We want to build the part that’s ours - the real features, the idea we can point at and say, “I made that.” The foundation is necessary, but it rarely feels like the thing we woke up excited to build.
A quiet nod to the room
If you’ve ever:
- Promised “just one last clean setup” and then watched Friday slide into Tuesday,
- Replaced a working admin because it felt a little haunted (probably just permissions),
- Spun up CI/CD and called it “me time,”
you’re in good company here. This is a shared hallway we all walk through, laptops under our arms, half-smiling at each other like, “Yep, doing auth again.”
Your turn - tell the story
Drop your saga in the comments:
- What did you rebuild (again)?
- What ate the most time?
- What tiny win kept you going?
We’ll read, nod, and pass the virtual coffee. If someone brings snacks, I’m deploying faster than a hotfix on Friday at 4:59.
