That “Just a Login” Conversation (You’re Not Alone)

September 27, 2026 • By Vladimir Elchinov

The conversation we’ve all had

There’s a moment every Rails project hits: your cofounder says, “It’s just a login,” and you feel your soul do a small, polite scream. You know what’s coming. It’s not a button; it’s a parade. Auth, roles, password resets, session security, 2FA “sometime soon,” and suddenly your sprint board looks like a grocery list that includes milk, eggs, and… a small aircraft carrier.

I’ve been there - pulling a late-night “quick” spike, only to watch it blossom into 37 tickets: Devise, Pundit, mailers, background jobs, rate limiting, JWT for mobile, Swagger docs, GitHub Actions, Mina/systemd/Nginx, plus “a simple admin panel” that’s definitely not simple. It expands faster than a weekend chore list once someone says “while you’re at it.”

Why it always snowballs

It’s not incompetence. It’s reality. Production-grade auth touches everything. UIs, controllers, tokens, cookies, security headers, account locking, role checks, audit logs, and that sneaky “impersonate user” feature you swear you won’t need (until the first support ticket lands). The first two items are serious; the third is where your optimism goes to nap.

  • “Just login” (plus passwords and resets)
  • “Just roles” (plus scopes, policies, and audits)
  • “Just a quick admin” (and a small existential crisis)

The quiet truth we rarely say out loud

We aren’t just tired - we’re protective. We care about foundations because our names are on the deploy. We’ve shipped “fast” before and paid interest on that debt like it was a luxury condo. And while some folks love to rewire everything with utility classes, others want Bootstrap sanity that feels like home - clean structure, readable HTML, and fewer hours playing CSS Jenga. Not everything needs a costume change to be useful.

A universal rite of passage (and yes, it keeps happening)

Ask around: everyone’s done the Groundhog Day tour. Copy-paste from old apps, that “one last” DIY rebuild, a tutorial that aged like milk, a giant kit that felt like adopting a spaceship. Different paths, same feeling: weeks pass, momentum slips, and your “simple login” turned into product purgatory.

Callback time: remember that “quick admin”? It’s now the busiest part of your app, wearing flip-flops and asking for a roadmap.

You’ve got company here

If you’ve ever:
- Promised “two days” and watched it melt into two weeks
- Juggled JWTs, Swagger, and cookies like a circus you didn’t audition for
- Debated Tailwind vs. Bootstrap and then chose “ship something today”

…you’re in the club. No membership card, just shared scar tissue and dark-mode empathy.

Tell us your version

Drop your story in the comments:
1. What “just a login” turned into for you
2. The one ticket you always forget until it bites
3. The moment you realized you were building a product, not a tutorial

Mock warning: Side effects of sharing may include relief, camaraderie, and discovering you’re absolutely normal.

We don’t need to fix it all today. We can just nod, laugh, and say, “Yep - me too.” And maybe, just maybe, estimate “three days” next time with a straight face.
