To Everyone Who Planned “Auth by Lunch” and Fought a Div Instead

November 07, 2026 • By Vladimir Elchinov

We’ve All Had That Day

I opened my laptop at 8:59 with a fearless plan: auth by lunch, payments by two, admin by three, deploy by five. By 5:07, I had… a hero section 2px off-center and a commit history that looked like a sticker book. Side effects may include renaming “Fix spacing” to “Aesthetic equilibrium pass” for the third time.

The Tiny Battle That Eats the Whole Day

Here’s how it went:
- 9:12 - Devise installed, roles mapped, confidence high (slightly too high).
- 10:40 - One layout div refuses to behave (as if obeying CSS is optional now).
- 1:15 - I invent a new commit emoji for “emotional support refactor.” 🫶
- 3:48 - Payment webhooks on hold while I “just try grid once more.”
- 5:00 - The UI is… almost centered, my soul is fully refactored.

It’s weirdly comforting to admit it: the plan is linear, the day is jazz. We aim for JWT + Swagger docs and end up writing the world’s cleanest .prettierrc. It scales faster than a crypto bro explaining Web3, just… in the wrong direction.

You’re Not Alone (Seriously, You’re in a Crowd)

This isn’t just a “me” thing. It’s a Rails thing, a dev thing, a “humans with calendars” thing. We line up Devise, Pundit, RSpec, CI, Mina/systemd/Nginx like tidy dominoes - and then a single layout quirk taps the first tile sideways. Suddenly our “quick pass” becomes a full-on investigation with a whiteboard, two coffees, and a rubber duck who looks concerned.

And yet, here’s the part I love: we keep showing up. We center the stubborn div. We write the tests. We name the branches like we’re curating a tiny museum. Three things that keep us going: momentum, community, and snacks.

Share the Battle Scars (We’ll Cheer With You)

Tell me your most ambitious day plan and what actually happened:
- The “deploy by dinner” that became “compose the world’s finest README.”
- The “quick admin” that birthed a 900-line helper and a new religion.
- The “tiny refactor” that somehow retired half your controllers and your optimism.

Drop your story - funny, real, messy. You belong here, with the rest of us who know the gap between the neat to-do list and the chaotic, creative truth of building software.

We’ll Try Again Tomorrow

Tomorrow, we’ll write roles that stick, webhooks that sing, and tests that pass on the first try. Okay, the second. Fine - third. But still triumphantly. And when a single div tries to rewrite our schedule again, we’ll laugh, commit, and find our way back - together.
